I’m currently in Manila to meet with work colleagues who are based here and so far it’s been incredible. The city itself is a humid, concrete jungle with bits of old Spanish architecture mixed in with new shiny buildings. Mostly though, it looks like a lot of these buildings have seen better days.
Right now, as I lay in bed, listening to the loud drunken songs of the neighboring Airbnb, I’m hit with a wave of immense gratitude for my new friends who have been guiding and caring for us along the way.
It’s a good way to end my stay in this city, as I found there were some minor but somewhat tricky work politics I had to navigate during this semi-work/semi-play trip. Things that are common but not worth a mention.
What is worth noting are some of my favorite Manila moments.
1. Trying my colleague’s delicious Maja Blanca - a coconut rice pudding dotted with sweet corn. We have been spoiled with delicious treats but I have to say this dish completely won me over.
2. Being taken around the city on a leisurely and well thought out itinerary. Our Ph colleagues were so generous with their time and efforts - I’m completely indebted to them. They organized delicious meals, drove us through never-ending traffic and walked through the beautiful sights with us on the hottest of days. It’s a real privilege to be taken around without having to make a single decision.
3. Meeting the team in person. It’s true that we’ve been able to cultivate relationships remotely but nothing comes close to sitting next to someone, nudging elbows, laughing loudly together on the same sofa. It’s these moments that counteract the niggly wigglies and make life so magical.
4. Finding out there’s a fan club for one of our beloved Melbourne-based colleagues. What a treat to find out we all worship this lovely man 🤣.
Again, I’m so thankful for the people here and the opportunities to connect. Life is good and about to get better. Next stop: Palawan!
Kind regards,
Clara
